I built this course for the part of HR work that no system handles: how people tend to work, and what to do when a colleague works differently from you. It is observational, referenced against Malaysian population data, and everything in it is tested against your own experience in the room.

Why this course exists
Only 25% of employees in Malaysia are engaged at work,1 and Gallup attributes at least 70% of the variance in team engagement to the manager.2 Most of what goes wrong between people comes from two habits: we read others by their character and ourselves by our circumstances, and we overestimate how well we know ourselves. This course works on both, in four hours.
Who it is for
- HR staff and people managers
- Team leaders and supervisors
A half-day programme for HR staff and people managers on seeing how they and their colleagues tend to work, and changing how they ask, assign and support accordingly. Participants derive a three-digit pattern code from their own date of birth and use it as a reference for working tendency, position in a team and request flow. Every exercise starts from the participant's own experience before the code is shown, and nothing is accepted that the participant cannot check against their own record. The code is used for self-awareness and working relationships only, never for hiring, promotion or appraisal. Participants leave with a request routed through their team map and a written plan for working differently with one colleague.
What the morning covers
9:00am to 1:15pm, with a 15-minute break. By the end, participants will be able to:
- Identify their own dominant working tendency and explain how the work environment turns it into a strength or a weakness.
- Describe the three position types (Architect, Bridge, Creator) and place themselves within a team.
- Relate two of their own past career years to the three rhythm periods: nurturing, rising and harvesting.
- Map how requests flow between members of their own team using the Circulation Flow Diagram.
- Route one real workplace request through the path of least resistance.
- Write a plan for working differently with one named colleague.
Module 1: Introduction and the Problem in the Room
- Overview of the programme, trainer introduction
- Ground rules: date of birth stays with the participant, only the three digits are shared and only by choice, no data to the employer, opt-out
- Agenda and learning outcomes
- Ice-breaking activity: name one good hire who didn't settle, one good person who left, and one request that stalled
Module 2: Your Own Grain
- The nine working tendencies
- Activity: pick the tendency that feels like you, before seeing the code
- Deriving the three-digit code from the date of birth; the first number as the main tendency
- Malaysian reference: how registered births spread across the codes (JPN daily live births, via data.gov.my, CC BY 4.0)
- Activity: compare the pick with the code in pairs
- A tendency, and how the environment turns it into a strength or a weakness
Module 3: Position
- The three position types: Architect, Bridge, Creator
- Malaysian reference: the share of each position type (same JPN births data, via data.gov.my)
- Activity: place yourself, then test it against one recent week of work
Module 4: Timing
- The three rhythm periods: nurturing, rising, harvesting
- Activity: place one tough year and one good year from your own career, looking back only
Module 5: Working With Difference
- Activity: write down who takes your requests easily, who doesn't, and who you go through to get a yes
- The Circulation Flow Diagram: upstream, downstream and the opposite bank
- Worked example: routing a request through a colleague who shares the manager's position
- Case discussion: placing a connector on a difficult client account
- Activity: route one real request (Worksheet 1)
Module 6: Back to the Job and Conclusion
- Activity: colleague plan (Worksheet 2)
- Take-home personal profile
- Review of learning outcomes (oral quiz)
- Call for action and Q&A
